  • CNSP, Cornell nepal study Program, Kirtipur, Kathryn S. March (guest) wrote 16 years ago:
THE CORNELL-NEPAL STUDY PROGRAM The Cornell-Nepal Study Program is a joint program of Cornell University and Tribhuvan University—the national university of Nepal. Students work with faculty from both universities to prepare for and undertake field research projects in Nepal. The program is located in the medieval town of Kirtipur, on the edge of the Kathmandu Valley and adjacent to the national Tribhuvan University campus. Students live and eat in Nepali-style residences with Nepali roommates who are also students at the University and in the Program. The Program Houses sponsor a variety of enrichment and social activities, including cultural exchange nights, films, dance and yoga classes, local excursions and host family placements. General course work includes language study in Nepali (with Tibetan or other language options also available) and a lecture course on Nepal studies, culture, history, politics and contemporary change. A seminar on research design, methodology and proposal writing prepares students for independent or group field research in the humanities, social sciences or sciences, under the supervision of Tribhuvan University faculty. Classroom instruction is supplemented by field training in several short field trips and one longer group study tour to give students experience in different cultural and ecological regions of the country. The semester of work culminates in 4 weeks of supervised field research, building upon internship, classroom and field study experiences. The major research paper or report resulting from this work is an excellent foundation for either a graduate or undergraduate thesis. For further information, contact Dr. Kathryn S. March <ksm8@cornell.edu>, or go to the Cornell-Nepal Study Program page on Facebook
